Welcome
Artists Lizzy Hobbs and Emily Tracy worked with J3 in Janurary and February 2011. We were awarded funding from First Light to make an experimental film based on archive footage from the BFI. We made a record of our adventures here. The blog is still live and we will post about the finished film's progress, and opportunities for young animators

Germs germs get on your nerves
Here is a brilliant rap inspired by the project, written by James.
Germs germs get on your nerves,
they go in your mouth and come out your nose and shoot out your hair like a water spout,
germs germs are no good for nothing except for the good germs that at least do something,
they fight the bad germs every day and wait for victory to come their way,
germs germs get on your nerves,
they go in your mouth and come out your nose they wriggle about in your belly all day and spread diseases and say 'oh yeah remix',
germs germs the good germs win they have a party at midnight jim,
they eat alot and burp alot and then play splat all night yer!

Animation in the pottery shed
Here we are on our last session today animating at top speed. We had a spare camera and computer so we captured some timelapse footage with it, we took one frame every five seconds. You can see I didn't have time to drink my tea.
Installation
There was a lot of excitement working with Emily planning the projection and exhibition of the film. The group had some excellent ideas and the resourceful Kyla ran away with the idea of merchandising germ related products. We will be showing the film in the pottery shed on parent's evening - 31st March.
Editing
Inspired by Jay's beatbox performance two weeks ago, we showed the class Lasse Gjertsen's brilliant film Hyperactive to describe the process of editing. Guido, Sinead and Aaron had a go cutting some of the different sounds to picture using Final Cut Pro. They picked it up in about two minutes.
Germinator
Today was our last session working on the animation and J3 have been very busy. At the beginning of the day we voted for Beth's great title 'Germinator'. Tyrese's 'DJ Germs' was extremely popular but after a discussion we realised that the title might be misleading. Posters were made in the morning using collage, you will be able to see them up around the school nearer the time of the film's premiere on the 31st March, but here is a sneak preview:

Sound Session 6 - Uncut
(The photos don't quite match the groups because we didn't get a photo of everyone on wednesday)
Sound session 1 - uncut
Here are the first 3 (of 6) sound recording sessions with Tim.
Our next workshop is on the 16th, and we will start the editing process, where we put the sound and the animation together. We have a lot of exciting sounds so J3 will have to make some difficult decisions.

A Title for our film
J3 are busy thinking of a title for their film. They will vote when we have our next day together on the 16th February. If you are not in J3 and you have a suggestion for them to add to the hat, you could leave you idea here in the comments box.
Achooo!
On Wednesday we also made some more animated sequences under the rostrum camera, they were based on the storyboarded ideas. Here are some stills:

Sound design with Tim Olden
Today sound designer and composer Tim Olden brought his experience, equipment and a few balloons to Gayhurst to help J3 make the sound effects for their film. J3 rose to the challenge with great enthusiasm, they were really excellent at making sounds of all kinds. We will upload as many as we can here next week. |
